Your questions answered

Selling your car on Trade Me Motors is easy and takes just 3 simple steps:

  1. Enter your car details - Type in your number plate and we'll automatically fill in your car's details like make, model, and year
  2. Choose how to sell - Set your own asking price with a classified listing or let buyers bid for the best price using an auction
  3. Add photos and description - Upload clear photos and then let our AI help draft your description

Your listing will be available to the over 1.3 million Trade Me users every month. If your car doesn't sell, you can relist it within 45 days for free!

You can sell your car anywhere in New Zealand on Trade Me Motors.

When you create your listing, you'll set your location so buyers in your area can find your car easily.

Buyers can come to you to view and pick up the car, or you can choose to deliver it if you're happy to do so. You'll select your preferred payment methods (bank deposit, cash, credit card, or something else) and pick up options when you list your car.

With over 2.3 million cars being watchlisted every month, Trade Me Motors is where Kiwi go to buy and sell vehicles.

Yes, you can sell a car with money owing on it, but you need to be upfront about it.

Trade Me Motors offers a "Money Owing Check" that you can add to your listing. This shows potential buyers if there's any finance or money owing on the vehicle, which builds trust and transparency.

When you sell, you'll need to:

  • Be clear in your listing description about any money owing
  • Pay off the finance from the sale proceeds or agree with the buyer for the finance company to transfer the debt to the buyer (though most buyers prefer cars without finance)

Adding a Money Owing Check to your listing helps buyers feel confident about purchasing your car. You'll get a Money Owing Check for free if you select a Standard or Premium listing.

Yes, you can sell a car without a current Warrant of Fitness (WOF) on Trade Me Motors.

When you list your car, you'll need to tell buyers about the WOF status. You can select:

  • The WOF expiry date if it has one
  • "No WOF" if the warrant has expired or the car has never had one

You'll also need to state whether "on road costs" are included in the price:

  • Yes - The car comes with a current WOF, registration, and road user charges
  • No - The buyer may need to pay extra to get the car legally on the road

Keep in mind that cars without a WOF may be harder to sell or sell for less, as buyers will need to pay for a WOF inspection and any repairs needed to pass.

Yes, you can sell a car without current registration on Trade Me Motors.

When creating your listing, you can skip entering your number plate or VIN:

  • Select "Enter your vehicle details manually" if the car isn't currently registered
  • Or enter expired number plate or VIN - we'll still be able to find your car's details

Just like with WOF, you'll need to tell buyers if on road costs are included:

  • Yes - The sale price includes current registration and road user charges
  • No - The buyer will need to pay to register the car

You need to be honest and upfront about the registration status in your listing. Unregistered cars may appeal to buyers who want to restore them, use them for parts, or export them overseas.
